ABCD hosted Mike Brokaw, PE from ODOT Central Office to share how current bridge guidance and Standards are performing in the field. Discussion topics included the Vandal Protective Fence, Unpainted Weathering Steel Site Review, the Concrete Bridge Railing, and the Prestressed Box Beams Standard Drawing Detail for Part-Width Composite Beams.
ABCD hosted Lisa Hoekenga, PE, SE from Michael Baker to present on the Norfolk Southern Seven Mile, Ohio Bridge Replacement Project. This was an emergency bridge replacement project after a storm event, which exceeded the 100-year flood elevation by several feet, created a scour condition at the base of the East Pier. The East Pier settled more than one foot, with a corresponding distortion of the superstructure resulting in loss of support at track level. A remote-monitored structure monitoring system was installed on the bridge while permanent improvements were developed. The replacement span is a 52'-0" single span through-girder bridge supported on precast concrete abutment seats and 5'-0" diameter drilled shafts. The replacement bridge was installed during a 24-hour track outage.
ABCD toured the Norfolk Southern Grand River Bridge replacement project. The project consists of constructing a new 11-span railroad bridge that totals 1,348 feet in length. The superstructure consists of 10-foot deep structural steel girders with precast concrete deck panels for the track bed. The substructure consists of 10 structural concrete piers founded on 7-foot diameter drilled shafts. The existing 1904 trestle bridge will be demolished after the new bridge is opened.
ABCD hosted speaker Tim Keller to discuss a variety of bridge topics, ranging from new steel provisions in the 8th Edition of the AASHTO LRFD to updates with the BDM, SMS, and MASH Standards. You can find his presentation here: Tim Keller Presentation
ABCD hosted speaker Sean Meddles to discuss two (2) recent bridge design topics: Seismic Policy and MASH Implementation. Click here to view his Powerpoint presentation!
