ABCD Awards Winners

Congratulations to the 2006 winners  ---  the Ramp C Flyover Bridge (I-75/I-70 Interchange) and the Perry Street Bridge over the Maumee River!

Ramp C Flyover Bridge (I-75/I-70 Interchange)

Owner – Ohio Department of Transportation
Contractor – Kokosing Construction Company
Engineer – CH2M HILL

The 2,376' curved steel girder bridge is now the longest in ODOT District 7.  Its sweeping alignment is accented by the images of F-16's on each of its 19 piers.

Perry Street Bridge over the Maumee River

Owner – The Ohio Department of Transportation
Contractor – Fru-Con Construction Corporation
Engineer – HNTB Ohio, Inc.

Having the appearance of a concrete arch, this 7-span, variable depth, spliced pretensioned/post-tensioned concrete bulb T-girder bridge was constructed in an astonishing 9 months.

ODOT Introduces New Policies on Skewed Bridges and Deck Placement

At a seminar held on April 24 at the ODOT Central Office Auditorium, the Ohio Department of Transportation discussed new policies relating to the design of skewed bridges and pouring bridge decks.  These policies have been put into effect to try to alleviate recent problems encountered during construction and to raise awareness of the issues involved.

The new design policy for skewed bridges can be summarized as follows:

·        For bridges with skew angles less than 30 degrees, the effects of skew do not have to be considered.

·        For bridges with skew angles between 30 and 45 degrees, the differential deflection between beams must be less than the beam spacing divided by 100. If not, a refined analysis must be performed and the beams may have to be redesigned or other measures may have to be taken.

·        For bridges with skew angles greater than 45 degrees, a refined analysis must be performed.  If the girder twist is greater than 1/8 inch per foot, the beams either have to be redesigned or other measures may have to be taken.

The new deck policies require that the effects of twisting of the overhang bracket be investigated.  This is caused by three components:

·        oil canning, which must be investigated for girders with depths greater than 78”

·        warping effects, which must be investigated for all decks

·        global deflection, which must be investigated if the load on the exterior girder is more than 110% of the load on the interior girders

In addition, the deck must be poured along the skew and the use of slotted holes in cross frames will no longer be allowed.

The preceding is a very brief summary if the information presented at the seminar.  More information, including a video of the presentation, can be found at http://www.dot.state.oh.us/se/skew/skew.htm.
