EVENT DETAILS:

Join ABCD Northeast Ohio for a Site visit at ODOT’s first bridge launching steel bridge erection project for the SUM-8-01.75 major bridge replacement project.  Each section is being pushed from pier to pier using rollers and hydraulic jacks moving the steel at 40 feet per hour. ODOT is planning six launches in all – totaling 1,600 feet and 8.2 million pounds of steel - for the SR 8 southbound structure, with the last one expected in January 2025.

Once the southbound bridge is completed, traffic on Route 8 will shift and work will start on the northbound bridge. ODOT anticipates that bridge launching for the northbound bridge will begin sometime in 2026.  

The $158 million project is expected to be completed in 2028. 

ODOT and the Ruhlin/ Great Lakes joint Venture have graciously allowed for 20 ABCD members to join them for a site visit on Tuesday September 24, 2024 at 2 PM.  Due to the limited space for the stie visit we are initially limiting attendees to ABCD members at a cost of $15 to cover food and beverages at a happy hour to follow the site visit.  If membership does not use all the slots it will be opened to non-members at $25 per person.  Final details and logistics will be provided to the lucky 20.  Please note that this is an active construction site with uneven terrain and some walking will be required for the site visit.  You will be required to provide your own PPE for the site visit with exact requirements to be communicated to the final list. Also while there is a launched scheduled for the week of September 23 the actual date is subject to change.  Although we will still be able to view the launching pit area where the jacks are, active or not.
